Masayuki Sebe's 100 Animals on Parade! is so much more than a typical counting book - it is an experience, a fun and engaging activity book. Preschoolers will find joy in counting the expressive and colourful animals, finding hidden figures, and laughing at the charming statements made by various characters on each page. For example, the reader is asked to find a particular figure who engages in an activity, such as "Who has birds flying out of his hat?" or "Where's the rabbit in yellow and black stripes?" The figures also communicate fun statements, including, for instance, "Ow! My tooth hurts!" and "Those fried shrimp look tasty!" These challenge the young reader to be cognizant of the fine detail inherent on each page - and the perfect opportunity for an adult narrator to try out different voices.

The illustrations are bright, varied in colour, and detailed. Each figure holds an engaging expression, running the full gamut of emotions, from surprise to happiness, to sadness and to anger. The action often spans more than the facing pages, with illustrations interconnected in novel and appealing ways that will have a young reader anxiously turning pages.

100 Animals on Parade will be a joy for adults and preschoolers to read together and is a fine addition to all public and elementary school collections, along with those at daycares and education libraries. It is a fine addition to Sebe's Let's Count to 100.

Highly Recommended.
