excerpt:

Be a birdie, Baby,
Be a lonely loon
Or be a bowl of pudding and
I'll eat you with a spoon.

Be a Baby is a lullaby in print. Each double page features soft-coloured paintings of a winsome baby engaged in different activities: hiding, bathing, crawling, playing, waving, crying, yawning and sleeping. Each little rhyme gives the baby a chance to imagine herself as something else:

Be a dancing flower
Be a tired tree.
Or be a cloud up in the sky
And make it rain on me.

internal art     Be a Baby is Sarah Withrow's first picture book. She has written several YA novels, including Bat Summer which was short-listed for a Governor General's Literary Award, and she has published a number of short stories for adults as well.

Manuel Monroy, an award-winning illustrator of children's books and magazines, has had his work exhibited in many countries. In Be a Baby, his depictions of an irresistibly charming baby girl surrounded by familiar objects complement Withrow's simple text perfectly. As well as being fascinated by the baby in the book, small listeners will delight in recognizing and pointing to as many of those familiar items as they can.

Be a Baby is the sort of book that calls out to be read over and over as part of the bed-time routine for a sleepy toddler.

Highly Recommended.

A retired teacher-librarian, Valerie Nielsen lives in Winnipeg, MB.
