Volume VII Number 13 . . . . March 2, 2001
Paulette Bourgeois. Illustrated by Brenda Clark.
Preschool - grade 2 / Ages 3 - 7.
Each of these two "treasuries" provides a reprinting of four books
originally written and illustrated by Bourgeois and Clark. Franklin's
Classic Treasury contains some of the duo's earlier Franklin
collaborations: Franklin in the Dark (1986), Hurry Up,
Franklin (1989), Franklin Fibs (1991) and Franklin is
Bossy (1993). The second collection, Franklin's Friendship
Treasury, which incorporates more recent works, utilizes a thematic
connection and includes: Franklin Has A Sleepover (1996),
Franklin's Bad Day (1996), Franklin's New Friend (1997), and
Franklin's Secret Club (1998).
Comparison with the original books shows no changes to either text or
illustrations. The only differences which could be noted were in the
colour quality of the illustrations. In some instances, the colours in the
treasuries were more or less intense than those found in copies of the
original books. Part of the difference could be explained by the less
glossy paper being used in the compilations.
Given that each treasury's selling price is less than what it would cost
to purchase the four individual Franklin titles separately, even in soft
cover, the collections are excellent home, school and library purchases.
Highly Recommended.
