image excerpt:

Amanda Adams loved Herbie Hickle. And everyone in the whole world knew it. Except Herbie Hickle.

"Maybe I should just tell him," said Amanda softly.

"No, no, no," said her friend Penelope. "You know boys. If you tell him, his eyes might cross and stay that way forever."

"Oh, I wouldn't want that," said Amanda.

"Then leave some candy on his desk," said Penelope. "He'll love that."

The next morning, Herbie found some peanut brittle on his desk. Herbie took a big bite. Herbie heard a big crack. Herbie dropped a big tooth.

Amanda Adams Loves Herbie Hickle is an amusing story of romance in the primary grades. All Amanda's friends advise her against telling Herbie that she loves him, and each has a different reason for not telling him along with a suggestion as to what she should do instead. Amanda tries each suggestion with disastrous results. Finally, when she and Herbie are sent to the principal's office, Amanda admits what she has done and why. Amanda is punished by having to stay after school every day for a week, but the story has a happy ending because Herbie waits to walk home with her each day.

Daniel Sylvestre's colourful cartoon-style illustrations nicely complement the story.

Recommended.
