excerpt:

We've hidden the last names of many of the world's top female hockey stars. Their names are written either forwards or backwards, and placed horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The remaining 19 letters, taken from the top and going left to right, spell out the nickname of Guo Hong, the amazing goalie of the Chinese women's team.
This activity book is the third in a series written by the Ross family. Because this book is meant to be consumed by being written-in, it is not suitable as a library purchase, but it would certainly appeal to home hockey fans. The book contains articles, trivia, word searches, match-ups and much more. The puzzles are quite novel in their conception and include the task of matching descriptions of team logos with their team names plus rebus puzzles of hockey players' names. The articles on the history of hockey, such as that on the Richard Riot of 1955, are both interesting and accurate. The story of Jacques Plante's introduction of the goalie facemask is well told, and the details provided on contemporary mask design are especially interesting. This new title also includes up-to-date information on weird hockey facts, women's hockey, and, for web surfers, a rated list of sites.

Teachers might find some of the puzzles useful for language arts, and mathematics teachers could use the statistics and facts in their teaching program. The bright, jazzy cover will attract kids, but some of the interior photos and cartoon covers are not as appealing as the cover. A good gift book for young hockey fans.

Recommended.
