excerpt: This is my family.
My Family is a new board book in the series "Talk-About-Books." The book
is rich with ethnic diversity and portrays a variety of families and family
groupings because some families "have lots of people in them, and some have
only a few." The fifteen photographs, taken by professional photographer Susan
Huszar, are bright, clear, and boldly framed in red. Families are shown in
several everyday situations including doing chores, walking, reading and
biking. Christmas and a birthday are also celebrated. The simple text explores
togetherness and starts and ends with the theme of love. While the photographs
demonstrate how diverse families can be, the text shows how families are the
same. Questions are included to encourage discussion between an adult and
toddler, although the book is sturdy and small enough for young children to
enjoy on their own as well.
Recommended. Shannon Nesdoly is a mother of two and a student in the Faculty of Education, the University of Manitoba.
