excerpt:

Once the eyrie is finished and the eagles have mated, the female becomes sluggish as eggs form within her. This period of inactivity usually lasts for about one week, including egg-laying. During this time, the male eagle brings food to his mate.

Bald eagles may lay one to four eggs, but two are most common. Northern eagles often lay more eggs than do their southern cousins. Bald eagles' eggs are dull white and weigh about 3.8 to 4.5 ounces [109 to 130 g]. They measure 2.3 to 3.4 inches [5.8 to 8.6 cm] in length and 1.9 to 2.5 inches [48. to 63. cm] in width. The eggs are laid two to four days apart. The first egg is usually the largest and heaviest.

These two titles from "The Untamed World" series are excellent. Each book, packed with colour photographs and clear, readable text, has a glossary, index, and a "20 fascinating facts" section. A page on "viewpoints" presents the pros and cons of a controversial question. The "Folklore" section in each book describes the animal's place in folk tales and legend, while "What you can do" gives addresses of conservation organizations.

The "table of contents" page from Alligators & Crocodiles provides an idea of the range of information presented: Introduction, Features, Crocodilian society, Hatchlings, Habitat, Food, Competition, Folklore, Status, Twenty Fascinating Facts, Glossary, Suggested Reading, Index. The credentials of the consultants listed are impressive, and the photographs are credited to such institutions as the American Museum of Natural History, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Highly recommended.

Luella Sumner is Head Librarian, Red Rock Public Library, Ontario.
