excerpt:

To keep their orchards in good shape, fruit growers have many jobs to do throughout the year. They want to make sure that the fruit growing in their orchards will be big and healthy. They want the fruit to look good. Big, tasty fruit sells at a higher price than small fruit. When a tree has too much fruit growing on it, its branches sometimes break. The farmer has to thin the tree to keep the branches from snapping. Thinning is taking the extra fruit off branches. It gives the fruit left on the tree more room to grow.

Most orchards do not get enough water from rain. Fruit growers bring extra water to their orchards using pipes and machines. Powerful sprinklers spray the water over all the trees.

This book, one of a series of four titles describing various types of farming, takes the young reader on a tour of a fruit growing farm. Written in a clear and interesting style, the book covers many aspects of fruit growing although not in great depth. The contents page provides headings which lead the reader from "What are orchards?" to "Harvesting the fruit" and "Fruit is good for you!". The colour illustrations, both photographs and explanatory drawings, provide more information on every page. The pages are decorated with small drawings of different fruits. Vocabulary words are printed in bold type, and there is a glossary and an index on the last page.

Kalman is well known for her excellent books for children. Credit is given to Ontario Agri-Food Education and the Ontario Tender Fruit Producers' Marketing Board, among others. This book would be an excellent addition to a library collection.

Highly recommended.
