A group of man cows is called a herd. A small herd has about ten cows. A large herd can have hundreds. Male cows are called bulls. Most herds have one bull and many females. Only females can make milk. They make it to feed their babies, which are called calves. Cows make more milk than their calves need. Dairy farmers collect this extra milk and sell it.
Most people simply call all types of cows 'cows'. Farmers, however, have different names for male and female cows of different ages. A young cow is called a calf until it is about nine months old. A male is then called a bull, and a female is called a heifer. After a heifer has her first calf. she is called a cow.

This book, one of a series of four titles describing various types of farming, takes the young reader on a tour of a dairy farm. Written in a clear and interesting style, the book covers many aspects of dairy farming (although not in great depth). The contents page provides headings which lead the reader from "what is dairy farming?" to "Moo-ving milk to a dairy" and "Milk is nutritious?" The color illustrations, both photographs and explanatory drawings, provide more information on every page. It is interesting to note that the children depicted enjoying the benefits of milk are representatives of different races. The pages are decorated with small drawings of clover, cows and cheese. Vocabulary words are printed in bold type, and there is a glossary and an index on the last page.

Kalman is well known for her excellent books for children. Credit is given to Ontario Agri-Food Education, Victoria Village Public School and the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, among others.

This book would be an excellent addition to a library collection.
