Caribbean (Jamaican)

This is a bouncing and clapping rhyme.

Mama buy bread,
Give baby none.

Baby get vex,
Throw himself down.

Clap hands, clap hands,
Till Mama come home.

The Parent-Child Mother Goose program brings together parents and very young children in program of sharing orals stories, songs and rhymes. The program which was established in Toronto in 1984 helps parents develop parenting and literacy skills. Part of the success of the program is that parents share their own rhymes and songs, and thirty of these rhymes from different parts of the world are collected in this handbook for parents and caregivers to use with babies and toddlers.

The rhymes are presented in their original language with an English translation which includes good instructions for turning it into a bouncing rhyme, a finger play or an action story. The languages include Ukrainian, Tamil, Argentinean Spanish, Punjabi, Serbian, Italian and several others. Each rhyme has a story, and the contributors from each culture are cited. This excellent collection will help parents remember their own rhymes from their childhood and their culture. It is illustrated with black and white photos of the participants from the program.

The Mother Goose program has produced a number of excellent resources including the video, Parents Kids and Mother Goose. This new work is a welcome addition and is highly recommended for all public libraries and family resource centres. It is also recommended for collections seeking multilingual materials.

Highly recommended.
