excerpts:
Pigs cuddling
Leopard sprawling (From Nap Time.)
Polar bear shaking
Hummingbird fluttering (From Bath Time.)
Lamb frolicking
Lions tussling (From Play Time.)
Each of these three very simple board books in the "Time To" series presents nine full-colour photos of animals carrying out an activity or action related to the adjective preceding the word "Time". The photos occupy most of each page with the simple text line describing what the animal is doing appearing at the bottom of the page. Racially inclusive, the tenth and final photo is that of a child/children and carries the question, "How do you nap?" [or "take a bath?", "play?"].
The books' animals range from the possibly familiar, like a dog, cat or horse, to the more exotic, such as a koala bear, hippo or chameleon. The vocabulary connected to each of the "times" is rich, with words like "sprawling" and "snuggling" being attached to "nap", "soaking" and "spraying" to "bath" and "frolicking" and "tussling" to "play".
This trio of vocabulary expanding board books would make fine home purchases and most definitely have a place in libraries serving the preschool crowd.
Recommended.
Dave Jenkinson, CM's editor, naps, bathes and plays in Winnipeg, MB.
