Holi Colors, a board book, introduces the youngest of readers to the Hindu festival of Holi, also referred to as the festival of colors, which celebrates Lord Krishna’s love for Radha.

Author Rina Singh presents Holi as a game, exclaiming, “Let’s play HOLI. Let’s have FUN!” Throughout the book, she encourages her young readers to imagine both the origin and the movement of the colors. Going from red, orange, yellow, blue, indigo to violet, each spread features a specific color. Once all the colors have been featured separately, the remaining spreads bring them together just like they come do during the festival itself. The photographs of children laughing, playing and having fun are of various ethnicities, showcasing that Holi is a celebration to be enjoyed by all. The playful quality continues with the rhyming text which flows smoothly from page to page. Singh effortlessly incorporates the peacock and the lotus, both symbols of the Hindu faith, in her text.

Peacock brought the dreamiest BLUE,

he said he saved it just for you.

Holi Colors, a quick read, doesn’t demand much from its readers except for an innocent curiosity to learn.

Recommended.
