Whose bum?

mouse’s bum.

In this hint-and-reveal board book, each recto offers babies/toddlers a view of the rear end/bum of an animal, 11 in total, and asks the title’s question, “Whose bum?”. Flipping over to the verso provides the correct answer, both visually and in words. Appropriate to the book’s very young audience, Tougas’ simply illustrated cartoon animals are presented on an uncluttered coloured background. Some of the animals, such as bird, bunny, dog and cat, children may have already encountered in real life, but others, including mouse, fish, lizard, hamster and turtle, may be more vocabulary builders. The two closing bums are trick questions as one belongs to a teddy bear while the final bum belongs to a diapered baby. On rereadings, the solid colour backgrounds in Whose Bum? offer opportunities to teach/reinforce the names of colours.

A good home or gift purchase as well as a worthy addition to libraries serving young children.

Recommended.
