excerpt:
When temperatures drop and snow and ice arrive, Canadians of all ages bundle up and winter sports begin. Sports covers 13 winter sports that are enjoyed throughout Canada. Skating (including hockey, speed skating, and ringette), skiing, snowmobiling, curling, sliding sports and ice climbing are some of the fun activities in which Canadians participate during the colder months. The format of Sports combines an engaging half page of large font information text with a page and a half of colourful photos with captions, fascinating facts and labeled diagrams. The text provides a mixture of historical information, the main components of the sport and its basic rules. The text is challenging for the younger reader, but guided support will help to explain unfamiliar terms and concepts. The text information will stimulate interest and questions about these fascinating sports. A glossary at the back of the book defines the bold font words in the text. Sports will expose young readers to a broad range of winter sports in Canada. The eye-catching format with a short, clear text accompanied by fun facts and colour photos will make a child revisit the different sports numerous times. The presentation of the diverse age range of participants enjoying these sports reveals the appeal that winter sports have for all Canadians. Highly Recommended.
