To say that Stevie loves sharks is an understatement. He is completely preoccupied with them to the point of distraction. Stevie applies shark-like behavior to everything that he does throughout the day while his mom, appearing a little exasperated in the illustrations, tries to get her little shark impersonator to act like a little boy. When she asks about when he last brushed his teeth, he replies that “Mako sharks don’t have to brush their teeth because they’re coated in fluoride.” For each statement from his mother, Stevie replies with a brilliant shark fact. Stevie is certainly a little imp who challenges his mom with his factual responses, and he is a typical preschooler whose playful activities are bursting with imagination. Lorenzo Montatore’s illustrations are big, bright and reflect Stevie’s mischievousness and high energy effectively. At the end of the day, mother and son share a quiet moment expressing their love for sharks. The story ends with young Stevie tucked in for the night, and on the very next page a new section of the book appears, one full of shark facts but with no introduction. Is Stevie dreaming, or is the author simply adding interesting facts for shark lovers? The lack of transition is a little messy, but, all in all, I Love Sharks, Too! is a fun book with lots of interesting information about sharks. Recommended.
