excerpt:

“Hi, Snapper” said Johnny. “What is the matter?”

“My friends and I want to go to the lake but we are
too slow to cross the road safely.”

Many children’s books have been written to promote a cause, and Never Give Up is one of them. It is a self-published paperback picture book designed to help save turtles and other wildlife in the Norfolk County area of Southern Ontario. The main part of the book consists of the story presented in seven double spreads, with two pages of back matter including photographs and an explanation of the project. There is also an accompanying recording of the story on CD, with music and sound effects, realized by Dave Collins.

With a rudimentary plot and childish colour illustrations, author Jan Everett tells how Johnny, who Never Gives Up, tries a variety of methods of ferrying the turtles to safety. One travels on his skateboard; his little red wagon can take three; but it is when he arrives at the idea of digging a tunnel under the road that the problem is fully solved. Three tunnels have actually been completed and more are planned by this citizens’ group who have the welfare of turtles, snakes and frogs crossing the Causeway Road at heart.

Not Recommended.

Ellen Heaney is a retired children’s librarian living in Coquitlam, BC.
