excerpt:

Daily life in New France was difficult. But the opportunity to start and succeed in a new place was appealing to many in France. Colonists created a life for themselves with hard work and a lot of help from First Nations communities and fellow colonists.

"Welcome to New France" is a six part series which tackles the challenges faced by Canada in its early beginnings. Each volume in this hard covered glossy paged series is divided into six chapters approximately two pages in length. Readers will gain a basic knowledge of the history, exploration, settlement and way of life in the new world from the early 1500's into the 1800's.

Each book has 24 pages of clearly and simply written text illustrated with maps, charts, photographs and paintings. From time to time, a sidebar appears giving readers information on lesser known historical facts (for example, the Iroquois word "Kanata" as the origin of Canada's name, or Louis XIV's gift of 800 unmarried women to New France called "Les Filles du Roi"). In every book, difficult words, which are highlighted in the text, are explained in a glossary on the penultimate page. Resources to extend and deepen the information provided is listed on page 31, with information on the author and an index appearing on the last page of every volume.

The six books comprise a good look at a the many challenges and dangers facing both colonists and First Nations people in early Canada. Teachers dealing with a Social Studies curriculum which includes First Nations and European settlement in the eastern part of Canada would find these books useful and appropriate for grade 4 or 5 students. Used as resources in a unit on New France, the simplicity of text, coupled with outstanding illustrations throughout, will encourage students to read and consult these books independently. Chapter headings in the Table of Contents page at the beginning of each volume will be useful in narrowing down topics for individual or co operative projects.
