Pig the Winner is the next installment in the “Pig” series by Aaron Blabey. And, like the rest of his books, Pig the Pug and Pig the Fibber, it is utterly charming and hilarious. Pig the Winner is the tale of Pig, a pug, who absolutely, positively, must win at whatever game he's playing. If he lost at something, “it would ruin his day”. (p. 2) Therefore, to ensure his day was never ruined, Pig took to cheating. Should his friend Trevor ever win at anything, Pig would “sob and... sulk” (p. 6) until his opponent let up and said that he won. One day at supper, however, Pig asks Trevor if he'd like to have a race to see who could eat the fastest. Trevor tells him no, he does not want to race, but “Pig had yelled, 'GO!' and was stuffing his face.” (p. 11) This leads to some unfortunate circumstances for Pig, involving “[swallowing] his bowl” (p. 15), among other things. The events ultimately cause Pig to eventually realize that perhaps it's okay to not win all the time. Blabey's illustrations are a joy-- full of movement and colour that hold a story all of their own. Pig is expressive and hilarious as he deals with his competitive edge, and Trevor holds charm in his wide-eyed looks. Aaron Blabey's Pig the Winner is a hilarious tale sure to have readers of all ages laughing aloud. The whimsical, steady prose, partnered with the outrageous illustrations, make this book one to be read again and again. Highly Recommended.
