Dan Bar-el answers the above question in a most engaging way. The unicorn is followed by other mythical creatures like Bigfoot, a Robot, a Loch Ness Monster, and even a Fairy Queen Ballerina Doctor. Each character’s positive attributes and advantages are discussed in this well-designed cumulative story, followed by the creature’s pitfalls, all written in a humorous fashion via a question and answer format. Enter the “sneaky flying alligator pirate” who steals the Ballerina’s wand. Dad to the rescue! As the costumed characters gather together in the backyard, the reader is treated to all the wonderful things a dad can do to help solve problems. Author of Not Your Typical Dragon, Nine Words Max and That One Spooky Night, Bar-el once again takes a unique perspective in this clever positive story extolling the virtues of being a dad. Because there is always so much written about a mother’s role in a family, it is a treat to see a book focus on the special things a dad can do, one written in an entertaining way. The flat cartoon like illustrations, done in gouache and photoshop are colourful and playful. The warm, comic artwork suits the lighthearted, whimsical writing style. Recommended.
