On Saturday, Georgie woke up on the wrong side of the bed. It looked like it was going to be one of those days. It turned out everyone was feeling the same.

Georgie, a grey, striped cat, wakes up in a bad mood. After falling out of bed and landing on the floor in a befuddled heap, Georgie finds his day keeps getting worse. As soon as he ventures out the door, he slips on a banana peel. Misery loves company, and all of Georgie’s friends are having rough mornings too: Feta the dog sits in wet paint; Lester the mouse misses his bus; and Ferdinand the mole hides out in a manhole. They all heave a sigh and collectively grumble, “I’m having a bad day.”

In a wordless spread, Ruth Chan’s ink and watercolour illustrations comically show the slapstick adventures that ensue when a sneeze sets off a chain reaction in the kitchen, with plates crashing down off shelves, batter splattering everywhere, and everyone ending up in a floury, sugary melee. While the understated text drolly states, “just when things couldn’t get any worse …”, the illustrations show a glass pickle jar landing with a “THUNK!” firmly on top of Georgie’s head. Everyone, including Georgie, erupts in uncontrollable laughter at the ridiculous situation.

Georgie’s Best Bad Day shows how good humour and good friends can turn a bad day into the best day. This charming picture book will lift your spirits.
