No talents wasted here, and those who have feasted on the beloved Lee’s wonderful rhymes in the past will revel in the chance to introduce and share this one poem in a board book which will create a new generation of admirers. Canada’s Dennis Lee, recipient of many awards, is truly a wordsmith when is comes to rollicking verses, recognizable in so many popular children’s poetry collections like Jelly Belly, Alligator Pie, and Bubblegum Delicious. His trademark lively rhythm matches expertly with refreshing and cheeky word choices that appeal to all the senses. Toddlers are in for a treat to hear these memorable and silly words in a delightful separate edition, lovingly illustrated by Sandy Nichols. This quirky, popular poem is truly brought to life with lively, coloured sketches that focus on a young irrepressible bear cub who will eat anything he finds, but he especially hankers for what can be found in the garbage. Echoing the spirited verse, the humorous artwork follows the adorable cub’s search for food as readers see him wander away from his mother, searching for the perfect snack, whether it be a bun, some jelly, “hamburgles”, ice cream, or fudge. Ah, but best of all... Garbage !! After this feasting, two friends help carry him home where he is greeted by a worried mother. It is all immensely engaging and satisfying. Highly Recommended.
