excerpt:

I am Ooko. I am a Fox. I live here, under this log. I have a stick. I have a leaf. I have a rock. But I do not have a friend to play with.

Ooko is a fun-loving fox that loves playing with all his toys: a stick, a leaf, and a rock. However, Ooko is lonely and looking for a friend to play with. He looks throughout the forest in holes, on tops of trees, and under a moose. He finally spots a dog and a young girl playing, and he hears the young girl’s mother call her daughter by her name, Debbie. So he decides he must learn how to fit in with the other “foxes” (dogs) by painting himself with spots, fluffing himself up, and making himself long ears out of fabric in order to win the friendship of his own “Debbie” (humans). He eventually finds his own “Debbie” as the human has confused him with her own dog. However, Ooko does not care for being dressed up in dog sweaters, having a bath in the sink, or being walked on a leash. While tied up by his new leash outside, he spots a racoon, which he discovers also shares the same interest in toys, sticks to be specific! The racoon unhooks Ooko from his leash, and the two new friends go off to play in the woods.

This story has a nice friendship message as it suggest in a subtle way to readers to not change who you are in order to gain friends. The text throughout the book is easy to read and easy for young readers to follow along. The illustrations are colourful and eye-catching.

Ooko is Esmé Shaprio’s first picture book. She has done a great job writing and illustrating a fun and engaging read-aloud story for young children.

Recommended.
