Creative masterminds Jack and Holman Wang enable a whole new generation of young people to gain exposure to the epic space adventures of the iconic Star Wars films. In this sophisticated board book trilogy, “Star Wars Epic Yarns”, felt figurines are used to weave the recognizable tale of a young boy learning to use the Force in a heroic battle against evil. All the favourite characters of yore are present: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Hans Solo, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and even the little droids that could be R2D2 and C-3PO. Following the plot lines of the classic films with delicious exactitude, familiar scenes are narrated one word at a time. The words selected to represent each yarn-tastic scene range from simple, tangible concepts (“boy”) to more abstract and complex notions (“learn”). Thus the Wangs’ word choices demonstrate a certain level of respect for the growing minds of their young readers. It is obvious that these books were designed to be enjoyed on multiple levels. Not only will their target audience delight in the colourful scenes, but also the adults in their lives reading these books to them will be filled with nostalgic amusement. The quality of the yarn replicas is commendable, and even the most devout Star Wars fan would be hard pressed to find fault with these felt likenesses. Having a wide range appeal for both boys and girls and with the advent of the upcoming release of Episode Seven in theatres, these “Star Wars Epic Yarns” board books are a home run. Clever, funny, and legendary, these board books may be an especially great way to entice Dad to read with his little ones (although not to say that Mom wouldn't get a kick out of them either!). If I attend any baby showers in the near future, I know what I’ll be bringing. Highly Recommended.
