Lots of Kisses is a board book by award-winning author Lorna Crozier (She won the 1992 Governor General's Literary Award for Poetry for Inventing the Hawk). Using rhythmic words, Crozier encourages parents to cover their babies with kisses. The book opens with a full-page photograph of a shy toddler playing peek-a-boo with his hands and text on the right hand page that reads, "If I kiss your eyelids". When the page is turned, you see a different baby playing with her toes and the words, "If I kiss your toes". Moms and dads are shown kissing their baby on the next three pages, and then again near the end of the book. Many of the babies and toddlers who look out at the reader (only one baby is asleep) appear to be happy or content, and so it's surprising when you see that the last baby in the book has a tear on her face (and a smile) and a sentence that mentions kissing away tears. The book is beautiful though. Pastel, patterned backgrounds appear behind the text. The book includes children and adults from different racial backgrounds and a variety of ages. The photographs include pictures of just mom (or dad) and baby, a married man and woman with a baby (the wedding ring is obvious), and a woman (with no wedding ring) and a baby. A fun addition to the book (or perhaps a happier ending) would have been to include a photograph or two of a baby kissing its parent. The babies in this book just receive kisses; they are not shown giving them.
