excerpt:

Melvis the monster and Elvis the elf were hunting for books on the library shelf.

Denis Lee has done a wonderful job presenting another children’s poetry book with over thirty new poems. Melvis is a monster, and Elvis is an elf, and they start their adventure together hunting for a book on the library shelf. The pair come across a book titled, Open This Book, and when they open it, they read, “Open this book, and you will see, a secret path called poetry...Follow the path, and you will find, a home for your heart, and a treat for your mind.” This leads Melvis and Elvis to discover an assortment of fun and entertaining poems ranging from “The Tale of the Terrible Toothpaste” and “To a Bully”.

The Tale of the Terrible Toothpaste

I sort of squoze the toothpaste
And it splatted on the floor,
So then I tried to put it back
The way it was before.
But every time I squished it in,
It squiggled out some more –
So that is why I hid it
In the bottom of the drawer.

To a Bully

We don’t like the measles,
And we don’t like the flu.
We don’t like bullies,
And we can’t stand you.

No two poems are the same in this book, and each is as humorous as the last. Melvis and Elvis is another work of art by Lee that will have children reading and reciting the poems over and over. The illustrations in Melvis and Elvis are bold and colourful, and Tankard did an excellent job capturing the charming and amusing element each poem presents.

Dennis Lee is a fantastic Canadian poet laureate, song lyricist, and author. He’s most famous for his beloved collections for children, such as Alligator Pie, Jelly Belly, Bubblegum Delicious, Garbage Delight and The Ice Cream Store. Illustrator Jeremy Tankard is a Canadian author and illustrator who has written and illustrated Grumpy Bird, Me Hungry, Boo Hoo Bird, Piggy Bunny, It’s a Tiger, and Here Comes Destructosaurus.

Highly Recommended.
