in 1863, Bell began teaching speech and music. He was 16 years old. Some of his students were older than he was!

He also studied his father’s Visible Speech system. The system used symbols to show how the mouth, tongue, and lips make sounds.

Barbara Kramer’s primary-vocabulary level biography of Alexander Graham Bell contains all the ingredients that will attract a young reader to this famous inventor of the telephone.

     Pages are coloured, text size is large, and pictures and other graphics make this nonfiction book look like a lab table with artifacts in three or four places. The two-page spread titled “7 Cool Facts About Bell” expertly reviews the content of this book in seven circles, each with a photo and a concise two-sentence fact.

     At the end of the volume is a simple quiz to remind students of what the book was teaching them about the inventor of the telephone.
