excerpt:

A smart feisty girl named Wilma Lee Wu liked climbing tall trees and chasing frogs too. But one tiny item she longed to throw out. “My name! it’s so boring, so blah,” she would pout.

Willma Lee Wu is a fun, adventurous girl who has decided to make a trip to The Change Your Name Store in search of a new name. When Willma arrives, she meets the zany owner, Ms. Zeena McFouz, who welcomes her in for the search to begin. Before Willma picks a new name, Ms. McFouz makes one rule clear, “With names that you like, you must take them inside, try them on gently, then go for a ride.” The name possibilities are endless, but Willma begins with being Babette Bijou and starts exploring the Louvre. Shortly realizing she can’t play that part, she tries out Samiya bint Sami al Sala and shops the markets in Bahrain, takes on being Dominga Delfino and explores Belize, and attempts to be Nuru N’Zinga in Kenya. After playing different roles, Willma searches for one more name and spots the one she’s been searching for: “This name is mine. It’s the one, you see. Wilma Lee Wu, I live it. That’s me!” Dashing home, she announces she loves her name just the way it is, with a twist that is, “I’m Wilma, I’m Wil-girl, I’m Wil-zee, I’m me!”

internal art     Told in rhyme, multiculturalism is highlighted well in this story, and the overall concept of identity and celebrating who you are is well-presented.

Tina Kugler’s illustrations are colourful, bold, and fun. Author Leanne Shirtliffe has a blog called IronicMom, and she has also written the parenting book Don’t Lick the Minivan: And Other Things I Never Thought I’d Say to My Kids.
