excerpt:

Florence had just moved. She liked her new room, and her new garden, and most of all, Florence liked that her new house was right next to a zoo. But even pandas couldn't make Florence feel better when she got a letter from her new school.

Florence has just moved into a new house, and she is about to start a new school. She misses all of her old friends terribly and is very worried about meeting new people in her new school. Florence's biggest worry is, "What if I don't make any new friends?" Sitting in her new room, Florence gazes out her window at the zoo located right beside her new home. The panda is her favourite animal, and, as she gazes out her window, she wonders what it would be like to be friends with a panda. Florence decides to write Panda a letter, asking if he'd like to be friends. Panda replies with, "I would love to be your friend", and the next day Panda arrives at Florence's door asking if she'd like to play outside. They have a great time swimming, playing hide-and-go-seek, and hula-hooping. Florence was still worried about her first day of school, and expressed her worries to Panda. Panda, of course, has an idea that would ease all of Florence's worries. On Florence's first day of school, she introduces herself and then shows her best friend, Panda, to all the kids on the playground. The other kids are amazed and impressed. One of Florence's classmates, Bea, tells Panda that her favourite animal is also a panda. Panda introduces Bea to Florence, and the both excitedly began to talk about pandas with each other. Immediately Bea and Florence realized they had many things in common and eventually become the best of friends.

internal art      Dear Panda is a really cute story that highlights friendship and the worries children can face when they have to start a new school. The illustrations in this picture book are bright, colourful, and fun!

Miriam Latimer is a very talented author and illustrator, and Dear Panda is just one of Latimer's many beautiful children's books. A great read aloud!

Highly Recommended.
