excerpt:

Soon EVERYBODY has a scarf.

Even Imp (the invisible monster) has a scarf (also invisible).

Mo is not amused.

Mo’s Mustache, by Ben Clanton, is a hilarious, delightfully illustrated picture book that’s sure to bring a smile to the faces of adults and young readers alike. Monsters and mustaches are combined with style to tell the charming story of a little yellow monster named Mo and his luxurious mustache. Mo just wants to be himself – unfortunately, all the other little monsters want to be just like Mo! Together, Mo and his fellow monsters realize that, while there’s nothing wrong with following the trends, following your heart is the most stylish thing of all.

internal art      Mo’s Mustache is beautifully illustrated and designed – a variety of different fonts are used within the text to add emphasis, create distinct personalities and create an almost vintage aesthetic reminiscent of old newspapers and typewriters. Even the background colour of the pages has been selected to contribute to this vintage feel. The monsters are definitely more cute than scary, sure to delight rather than frighten small readers. Each monster has a distinct personality and is illustrated with soft, cheerful colours. The characters express their emotions with a range of silly sound effects (GAH! WHAA?! MURF.) that would make reading the story aloud a hoot.

While the moral of the story is clear (be yourself!), the story’s sense of humour keeps it from becoming syrupy.

Mo’s Mustache is sweet, spirited, charmingly illustrated, and loads of fun.

Recommended.
