excerpt:

This morning I got up, ready to play.
Mom said, “Your cousin is coming today.
He’s only little, so show him you care.
Please remember, it’s important to share.”

When I first received the review copy of Share, written and illustrated by Sally Anne Garland, my initial response was an exclamation of delight. Since we all judge books by their cover, I dare you to judge Share poorly. And it’s not just the cover that is darling; this playful picture book gently encourages children about the art of patience and – you guessed it! – sharing.

internal art     The story’s rhymes pop in page-turning rhythmic bursts, narrating the woes of a bunny named Bunny who is plagued by her young cousin. Share opens with Bunny smiling as Cousin toddles into the room. Mom reminds Bunny to share, and then the disasters unfurl. Cousin jostles and jiggles, bobs and blocks, scribbles and scrawls. Five pages end with poor Bunny stating, “I gave up doing that and…” as she moves on to a new activity until finally, she huffs and puffs and walks out the door.

Mom again reminds Bunny to share, recognizing it’s tough when Cousin copies her every move. When Auntie finally returns, she tells Cousin it’s his turn to share, so he hugs and squeezes and says thank-you, leaving Bunny “sort of” missing him when he leaves.

Share is a perfect springboard for discussions about getting along with younger relatives and friends. This is a must-have book for any family expecting a new sibling.

The illustrations are a fun combination of whimsically patterned backgrounds and scratchy, wiggly lines, reminiscent of a little person’s masterpiece. Cute details sprawl across the pages, such as Cousin’s post-painting tiny green hand and footprints.

     A joy to read aloud!

Highly Recommended.

Gwen Smid is a teacher, a writer, and a big sister. She has been forced to share on many occasions.
