Can’t you just picture a cat sleeping like that? But how can Nat the cat sleep with a pesky kitten trying to wake him at every turn of the page? Eventually the kitten succeeds in waking his older pal, and the cat antics begin. And eventually the kitten, as all kittens do, powers out and “zzzzzzz.” The rhyming word choice is spare in this delightful picture book for young children, and deliberately so. The language typifies cat behaviour, and having three cats myself, I nodded in recognition on nearly every page as Nat and the kitten sleep their way through the book. Words like “whoosh”, “shush” and “hush”, take on an onomatopoeic form as the wind blows the words around the page, furthering the feeling of movement throughout the book.
The mood of the book is playful, easily appealing to a preschool audience. Victoria Allenby’s title is a perfect choice for bedtime and storytimes for young children. Highly Recommended. Jill Griffith is the Youth Services Manager at Red Deer Public Library in Red Deer, AB.

Tara Anderson’s illustrations are whimsical and fun, and having many farm cats herself, she well knows what cats do and how they look doing it. Mediums include pencil crayon, watercolour, gouache, acrylic paint and glaze, giving the illustrations texture, and making the art pop off the page with Anderson’s bright colours. Although the illustrations complement the story, they also tell a story on their own, encouraging children, and children and their grownups, to read the story again and again.
