MLA CONFERENCE: GATEWAY TO MANY WORLDS


From Thursday, May 9 to Saturday, May 11, the Manitoba Library and Information Associations Annual Conference is being held at the Ramada Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg.

The theme of this annual conference, aimed at library professionals and information providers, is "Libraries: Gateways to Many Worlds." Speakers will address a wide range of topics. Keynote speaker Kaycee Hale, an internationally respected lecturer for civic, social, and professional groups, will discuss communication and management skills. Friday's program also features Srinija Srinivasan, the head of design and maintenance of the world's most intuitive and efficient World Wide Web site, YAHOO!

T21 - Wanted: Peter Rabbit -- THIEF!

Presenter: MARGARET BUFFIE

Censorship from the author's perspective -- how can it influence writers to reconsider their work in light of possible future censorship issues, as well as how concerned individuals and writers can work together to keep quality literature from being attacked. This session will also ask the question: If Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit can be censored, is it even possible to write a "censorproof" book for children?

F09 - Show What You Know

Presenter: MARGARET STIMSON

Have you ever thought of creating a computerized presentation or slide show? Participants will see features of a variety of computer presentation applications, from the simplest program designed for kids to the popular Power Point and Clarisworks products.
F26 - CM Magazine: From Conception to Virtual Reality

Presenters: PETER TITTENBERGER & DUNCAN THORNTON

This session provides a history of the Manitoba-produced CM magazine from initial formulation through the realization of a weekly electronic journal. Included topics: marketing plan; subscriptions; advertising; other sources of revenue; production; the World Wide Web and listservs.

S05 - Gateways to the Past: Canadian Historical Fiction for the Middle Years/Junior High

Presenter: DAVE JENKINSON

An examination of historical fiction written over the last quarter century by Canadian authors. What periods are covered and where are the gaps?

S06 - Ontario Curriculum Clearinghouse

Presenter: TANIA COSTANZO

A description and explanation/demo of the OCC. Of particular interest to teacher-librarians and those involved in the education field. The OCC is gathering together curriculum and resource materials for the province, and encouraging the sharing of these resources.
S11 - Curriculum Design and Resource-Based Learning

Presenter: PAT MACDONALD

In this session, Pat MacDonald sketches out the design of the province's new curricula, the incorporation of resource-based learning, and the use of learning resources.
S15 - School Librarianship: An International Perspective

Presenter: GERALD R. BROWN

An overview of the issues and activities in school librarianship around the world, with special attention to Australia, the Caribbean, and Great Britain. The work of the International Association of School Librarianship will be highlighted in relation to other national/provincial associations' International Relations Committees.
S16 - Untangling the Net

Presenters: ELAINE SEEPISH & MARGARET KURYS

The Internet can be either a goldmine of information or a quagmire. Margaret and Elaine, who surf the Net daily in search of answers to questions from teachers and their students, will share some of their secrets. Included will be discussion of Netscape, search engines, listservs, the World Wide Web, and useful websites for teacher-librarians and educators. This session would be most suitable for the novice who wishes to go beyond e-mail. Emphasis will be on school applications.
S26 - Down to My Last Few Bucks: Getting the Inside Story on the Depression in Manitoba

Presenter: CATHERINE MACDONALD

This session will preview the Edukit developed by the AMA to introduce grade eleven history students to archival material and research in archives. The Edukit consists of a video, audiotapes, facsimile documents, and teacher's guide. This session will be of particular interest to librarians working in a high school setting.

Hands-on Internet labs will run continuously all three days.
