GERRARD WELCOMES IMPERIAL OIL'S DONATION OF SURPLUS
COMPUTERS FOR CANADA'S SCHOOLS

WINNIPEG, October 20, 1995 -- Secretary of State for
Science, Research and Development Jon Gerrard today announced
that Imperial Oil has become a key supporter of the national
Computers for Schools Program.
"I welcome Imperial Oil's contribution, which represents the
single largest donation of surplus computers from the private
sector to date," said Dr. Gerrard to the assembled members of
the Science Teachers' Association of Manitoba. "I'd like to
congratulate Imperial Oil for providing more Canadian school
children with access to computers. It's this kind of community
involvement that will help prepare them for the knowledge-based
jobs of the future."
"For many years we have supported a large number of youth
programs and activities, and now, we take great pride in
assisting Computers for Schools," said Imperial Oil Senior
Vice-President Brian Fischer. "Under the banner of Imperial's
Esso Kids Program, we have contributed over one thousand surplus
computers so far to assist Canada's schools in acquiring the
technical capability so necessary to the effective education
of our youth."
The Computers for Schools Program has been in operation for
two years and in that time has delivered approximately eleven thousand
computers and fifteen thousand software packages to schools and libraries
across Canada. These results stem from close collaboration
between federal, provincial and territorial governments and
impressive contributions from the private sector. The Canadian
Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers of America provides volunteer
technical staff to collect, inspect, repair and distribute the
surplus computers donated to the Program.
Computers for Schools is one of a number of initiatives
managed by Industry Canada that promote a science, innovation and
entrepreneurial culture in Canada.
