excerpt:

Say 'hi' to Scruncheon; a big, friendly Newfoundland Dog... ...and his friend Touton; she's a playful Labrador Retriever! They're hiding in the familiar Newfoundland and Labrador scenes throughout the book. See if you can find them, along with the other hidden objects.

Find Scruncheon and Touton 2 is the second seek-and-find book by mother-and-daughter team Nancy and Laurel Keating. Starring two familiar dog breeds named for the island and mainland portions of Newfoundland and Labrador, the book will amuse children in the tradition of Where's Waldo?, the I Spy books, and Richard Scarry's Busytown books.

Each page opening depicts a typical Newfoundland setting and a list of items to find. For example, at the busy Waterfront, readers are asked to locate Scruncheon and another 10 objects, including a toy puffin, a starfish and maple leaf. As in the first book, the Keatings have chosen to be representative rather than specific with their illustrations, including settings by theme (winter carnival, a capelin run) but many with recognizable landmarks (Confederation Building), or unique cultural symbols (Jelly Bean Rowhouses, Christmas Mummers). Again, in the final pages, they have reproduced small images from somewhere in the book (such as a bag of Purity Jam Jams) as additional challenges for discovery.

This book will occupy children for many hours as they seek the objects specified. With no storyline and tiny images, it is more suited for individual or small group use.

Recommended.
