CM . . . . Volume XIX Number 15 . . . . December 14, 2012
excerpt:
Originally published in 2004 as part of the "Kids Can Read" series, as a Level 1 book for children just beginning to read, Pup and Hound has been reformatted as a board book. Originally taller than wide, as a board book, Pup and Hound now has a square shape, and this alteration in shape has, in some instances, caused some of the detail at the top and the bottom of the original illustrations to be lost. However, the increased width of the book means that details that had to be omitted to fit the original format are now restored. An advantage of the board book format is that the book lies flat when it is opened. Consequently, those portions if the illustrations that were somewhat "buried" in the gutter of the "Kids Can Read" version are now completely visible. Whenever a storybook that has been published for one group of readers is then repurposed for another audience, the question has to be asked, "Does the story still work for this new (and younger) audience?" In this instance, the answer is a definite "YES!" Hopefully, other titles from the "Pup and Hound" series will also appear as board books. Highly Recommended. Dave Jenkinson, CM's editor, lives in Winnipeg, MB.
