excerpt:

“You messed with the wrong mercenaries, girl! We’re getting paid a fortune for him alive, but you…?

“…There’s not reason why I shouldn’t strange you her an’ now!”

The Captive Prince is the third book of Scott Chantler's “Three Thieves” graphic novel series that also includes Tower of Treasure and The Sign of the Black Rock. This instalment finds Dessa, Topper and Fisk still on the run from the Queen’s guards. While hiding internal artout, Dessa discovers a pair of kidnappers and frees their captive only to discover that he is a prince. Much of the book focuses on Dessa and the prince and the difficulties that Dessa and her friends face after rescuing him. This book focuses less on Dessa’s search for her brother than did the previous two books, but that fact makes it no less action-packed.

As with the previous two novels, The Captive Prince is fast-paced and full of excitement with plenty of daring escapes and close calls for the three protagonists. Dessa’s character is developed more fully in this book, and much of the story focuses on her. The book is humorous, and the detailed illustrations often contribute to the humour and the momentum of the plot.

The Captive Prince maintains the high quality of the first two books in the “Three Thieves” series. It is well illustrated with good characterization and an action-filled plot. The Captive Prince, which does work as a stand-alone read, is an excellent choice for fans of fantasy and adventure stories and is a highly recommended purchase for public and school libraries.

Highly Recommended.
