excerpt:

Kai knew he was in fire land. It was hot. Very hot. And there were fires everywhere. Flames shot up into the smoky air. Sparks of fire flew all around them.”

Infernix, by Mac Park, is part of the new fantasy series “Boy vs. Beast: Battle of the Worlds.” Kai Masters is a 12-year-old Border Guard who is in training to become a Boarder Master like his dad. Kai’s job is to protect Earth from the beasts who want to rule it. The beasts often try to break through the wall that separates Earth and Beastium. Kai’s job is to prevent the beasts from doing this. Kai, along with BC, his dogbot, must do this task alone, aided only by the upgrades and battle gear they have won from previous battles.

internal art      In Infernix, Kai and BC travel to the fire land where they are first attacked by a group of fire flies and then by a small fire spitting beast. Kai pushes the beast into the fire pit, but the fire only made it bigger. As a consequence, Kai and BC must battle the new and bigger beast.

Infernix is a beginner chapter book with large font, and several of the words are bolded to capture the reader’s attention. Infernix is full of black and white illustrations showing futuristic gadgets which are used in the book. The book is geared for younger boys just beginning to read chapter books, but many older reluctant readers will also enjoy it. Infernix contains four pages of comic strips featuring Kai and the beast battling. The book is engaging, and its simple sentence structure makes it easy to read. Infernix will be a hit with boys.

Recommended.
