INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM: DIGITAL DUMPING

Ten journalism students and their professor at the University of British Columbia won an Emmy Award in 2010 for a news documentary called Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground. They traveled to Africa to find out what happens to the computers and cell phones that people throw away. After a lot of investigative research, including secretly filming the people who buy and sell used computers, they put the story together. The film showed the environmental impact of our digital garbage. It was shown on PBS. The ten students have graduated and are now working as journalists. The latest books in the “Green-Collar Careers” series present a very good overview of careers in ecotourism, environmental law, re-greening the environment, and transportation. The examples are well chosen to capture readers’ interest and to motivate them to seek further information about jobs that address current concerns in conservation and environmentalism.

      Each book includes a table of contents, a simple glossary and index, and a list of web sites for further information. Each book ends with a summary page to help the readers put some of the ideas in the book into action. Although the summary in each book is unique, reflecting the focus of the book, each book includes the same safety warning.

Please get permission from the adult who cares for you before making trips to new places or volunteering in your free time. Always let him or her know where you are going and who you are meeting.

      Beautifully illustrated with photographs on every page, the text is attractively placed on the page in a very reader-friendly presentation. Green careers from around the world are highlighted with specific career profiles from Canada, the United States, Great Britain, New Zealand, Switzerland, and other places. As with earlier books in the series, it is hard to find anything to criticize about this outstanding series. It is a very readable introductory resource, useful to those who are beginning to research career information.

      Green Ways of Getting Around: Careers in Transportation looks at green careers involved in land, water, and air transportation, and urban planning. The pros and cons of alternative fuels, such as planes powered by algae-based fuel and a solar-powered catamaran, are examined.

      Legally Green: Careers in Environmental Law considers green careers in politics, education, investigation, enforcement, and justice. Historic examples of the need for environmental laws, such as the smog disaster in London in 1952 which resulted in more than 4,000 people dying, are used to set the context for the importance of environmental laws.

      Re-Greening the Environment: Careers in Cleanup, Remediation, and Restoration covers green careers in rehabilitating the environment after things have gone wrong. Some of the career opportunities include environmental scientist, hydrogeologist, bioengineering, and biologists, as well as careers in monitoring and enforcing environmental accountability, and careers involved in raising public awareness of the need for action.

      Touring, Trekking, and Traveling Green: Careers in Ecotourism examines green careers that include being an eco-tour leader, managing green tour accommodations, travel agents specializing in ecotourism, and teaching others to become eco-certified in green tourism. Eco-tourist attractions, including places like the Eden Project in Cornwall, Great Britain, need scientists, gardeners, gift shop sales people, and restaurant chefs, all knowledgeable about the environment. There are ecotourism career opportunities for everyone who values the environment.

      Green careers is a fast growing career field. The “Green-Collar Careers” series is current and informative with good resources provided to locate further information. Whether purchased separately or as a series, these books will be an excellent addition to libraries looking for green-collar career information.
