excerpt:

Family Feast.

Christmases at the Biebers were a big event! The whole family came, including grandparents, grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, kids and stepkids – everyone was invited. Then everyone would settle down and eat a delicious turkey and gravy dinner. "I\m telling you," says Justin, "my grandma puts on an awesome Christmas dinner." After dinner, the gift-giving began. The whole family plays a game with dice to decide who gets which wrapped surprise. "Then we all open our gifts and end up trading anyway," Justin says.

internal artWith the subtitle of Unleashed and "Unauthorized" on the cover and the bolded sentence, PLEASE NOTE: This book is not affiliated with or endorsed by Justin Bieber or any of his publishers or licensees, on the copyright page, the book's intended audience of 'tween girls might think that they are going to be given access to information that the young singing sensation and his handlers have tried to hide from adoring fans. However, as the excerpt above reveals, the book's contents are really pretty tame stuff, with the bite-sized snippets of information consisting of facts that true Bieberites would likely already know. What the book is first and foremost is a photo album of glossy full-colour photos of Justin Bieber. In addition to themed two-page "chapters on topics such as "Growing Up." "Love Me," "Hair He Is!" and "Behind the Music," Justin Bieber contains a "Never Say..." quiz in which readers must guess which Tweets are Justin's and which belong to one of five other celebrities; a word search; a fill-in-the-blanks page in which fans can indicate what they would say to him if they could meet him; a true/false quiz; a choose-you-own adventure type activity to reveal "What kind of fan are you?"; a snakes & ladder-like game; an either/or activity (Would you choose to "Bake him your fave cake or Have Justin cook for you?") and a multiple choice "Ultimate Fan Quiz" ("Which of these instruments does Justin not play? a. Banjo b. Trumpet c. Piano). Answers to the various quizzes are provided at the end of the book.

Since the contents of Justin Bieber would have a short shelf life in most school and public libraries, the book's chief target market is obviously the individual fan who would most likely cannibalize it for its photos. However, the book should still be considered as a possible purchase by those libraries that want to attract the reluctant female reader.

Recommended with reservations.
