Did You Know?
Everyone knows that 87 is an important number for Sid, marking the year and even the month and day of his birth. But he also signed a contract extension in 2007 that pays him an average of $8.7 million per year.
If you don’t know that Sid is Sidney Crosby, then you must not live on planet hockey, otherwise known as Canada! “Sid the Kid” is again one of the superstars included in this year’s edition of Hockey Superstars by writer Paul Romanuk.
There are the usual 17 stars in this 2010-2011 edition. Several of those new to the line-up are Drew Doughty, Zach Parise, Marian Gaborik and Jaroslav Halak. However, seasoned stars such as Ovechkin, Thornton, and Malkin have new statistics and new tidbits of information.
Did You Know?
One of Evgeni Malkin’s favourite meals is borscht, a traditional Russian and Ukrainian soup made from potatoes and beets. His mother, Natalia, makes it for him whenever she’s in town.
 The successful format of each book features a full colour poster photo of the stars in action, with stats and a short bio on the right hand page and the scoop on their careers plus a few fun facts on the left of the double page spread. New this year is a “hockey memory” from each player, special moments in their careers.
As well as the star information, there are lots of extras. You will discover a listing of each team highlighting facts on colours, home arena, mascot, cups won and nicknames. There is also a visual/text reference of referee signals and what they mean which will be of interest to the novice player or fan.
The issue is “interactive” in that there is ample space for readers to chart their favourite team’s progress, end of season standings, playoff predictions, favourite players’ scoring records and favourite goaltenders’ records.
Final team standings from 2009-2010 will benefit the hockey pool enthusiast, and a space for the countdown to the Cup 2011 for the Eastern and Western Conferences will bring the season to an exciting conclusion. The edition finishes with a listing of the NHL awards, a short description of each, the winner from 2010 and room for readers to write their own predictions for 2011. The format does not include a table of contents or an index, but one quickly adapts to the layout, and any information is easily located.
Scholastic has produced another glossy, well organized publication. The style is breezy, informative and entertaining. The cost has increased, but, for the avid young fan, this year’s edition is still worth the $7.99.
