excerpt:

In every picture,
In every land,
The queen always held
A purse in her hand.

The purse made Kay wonder:
What would a queen need? A bag full of money? A good book to read?

In this amusing picture book, Frieda Wishinsky explores a topic that many royal-watchers have wondered about over the years: what does the queen carry in that ever-present purse? By making a small girl, Kay, ask the question and suggest possible answers, Wishinsky gives us a light-hearted dialogue that young children will enjoy. Wishinsky never quite reveals the secret, however. That is left up to the child reader’s imagination.

Wishinsky is an author who has written for all ages. Her best known picture books are the “Please, Louise!” series, but she is also known for Oonga Boonga and You’re Mean, Lily Jean.

The illustrator, Loufane, lives and works in Montreal. Her pictures are large and colourful, in a semi-cartoon style.

Recommended.
