excerpt:

Lay down
Lay down
Lay down for the night

Rest your sleepy eyes
And let your heart be light

Based on the lyrics of Jill Barber's original song, "Lay Down, which she wrote for Nova Scotia's "Read-to-Me" program which sees every newborn child in that province being given a literacy bag containing books and a CD of songs and rhymes, this brief board book contains eight double page spreads. internal artHilda Rose's cartoon-style illustrations feature a human mother with her child in the first and last spreads, with the baby's eyes looking sleepy in the opening spread and closed in sleep in the final one. In between, an owl, goose, otter, fish, racoon and squirrel parent can be seen putting one or more of their offspring to sleep. With the exception of the fish, the other animal illustrations show the animal's "child" enfolded within the security of its parent's comforting "arms." The text also offers the reassurance that:

But when the sun
meets the horizon
I'll be by your side

internal art     The simple rhyming text, coupled with Rose's bold illustrations, should make Baby's Lullaby an oft-requested read (and not just at nap time). Purchasers of the book receive a code that will allow them to download a free electronic copy of the song. (As an aside, a video of Jill singing "Lay Down" at a Dartmouth, NS, book store can be found on YouTube.) The audio version truly captures the book's soothing lullaby qualities.

Highly Recommended.
