Same Same first appeared as a 24-page hard cover picture book in 2009 (See review at Vol. 15, No. 8, December 5, 2008), and its content has now been reworked as a board book that is both shorter in length and smaller in its dimensions. Whereas the hardcover picture book had 10 pairs of facing pages, the revised board book has but seven, with. “round things,” “long things” and “things that go” being omitted. Barb Taylor noted in her original review that Same Same incorporates a linking component with one of the three items from each pair of facing pages then reappearing on the next page pairing. Because a trio of facing pages have been dropped, the Jocelyn/Slaughter duo could not simply repeat the illustrations as they appeared in the 2009 version of Same Same. Instead, they had to make some modifications to maintain the illustration linkage. For example, the red dress, which was one of the three original “red things,” has been replaced by a red chair, the only red item to be found on the preceding “things with four legs” pages.

Because of its sturdier construction, the board book version of Same Same is an excellent home and library purchase for those younger “readers” whose finger dexterity is still not sufficiently developed to handle the more fragile pages of the earlier hardcover book. Hopefully, however, as these youngsters mature, they will have an opportunity to interact with the original Same Same.
