Like Robert Munsch's Love You Forever, the principal audience for Welcome Song for Baby is more likely parents (and even grandparents) than it is the very young children to whom the words will be read. The board book's contents, a lullaby, alert those given the gift of a newborn child to the reality that their world has been forever changed by this life they have created, a life which is filled with limitless potential.

The "Hey ya hey" chant which opens and closes the book identifies the contents as being connected to First Nations culture, and the author, who currently teaches creative writing at the University of British Columbia, is a member of the Dogrib (Tlicho) Nation from Fort Smith, NWT. The book's 10 illustrations, full-page, full-colour photos occupying the rectos of facing pages, however, universalize Van Camp's words as the adults, infants and toddlers seen in the photos come from all racial groups. The photo of a silver-haired woman (possibly a grandmother) kissing an infant also suggests the special role extended family have in raising a child.
