Ryan Heshka’s ABC Spook Show might feel a little like an advertisement for his artwork. In reality, it probably is. The “writing” (sparse, as obviously it is an ABC book) is sometimes unique, sometimes overused (F is for Frankenstein), and sometimes strangely forced (for example, K is for Karloff): Boris Karloff may not be known by name to young children. L is for Lugosi is similarly problematic, as Lugosi was a Hungarian actor who played Count Dracula on Broadway in the 1920s. That being said, the artwork, itself, is fun and would each the targeted market without much difficulty. The single word ABC format (or in some cases single sentence format, like M is for Mad Scientist), however, seems a little young for the same age group. Chances are, however, that kids will barely notice the words next to the creepy, crawly, stylized paintings that depict everything macabre in a most amusing—and unusual—way. Recommended. Sandi Harrison, who completed her Master of Arts in Children’s Literature at UBC in May 2007, is currently in the Education program at SFU.
