excerpt:

"The next day, at recess, the clamor starts again.

'Look, it's the walking staircase!' cries Pete.

'No, it's Mrs. Ladderhead!' Felix shouts.

'Wait, I think it's a skyscraper!' shrieks Anna.

Eddie isn't ignoring them. He's just not listening.

Eddie Longpants is most unusual. He is very, very tall. Not only will no one play with him at recess, but some kids think it is funny to tease him. When Eddie's even taller mother comes to the school, the teasing intensifies and his teacher, Miss Snowpea, gets angry. Running from the teacher, one of the culprits, Pete, climbs a tree and becomes stuck. It is Eddie's tall father who rescues him. Suddenly, Eddie's height is no longer so funny.

internal art     Levert's folk art motif adds a refreshing touch of whimsy to this book that deals with teasing and bullying. Eddie and his family stretch out over two pages, orienting the reader to hold the book vertically. This design technique truly emphasizes the family's stature!

Levert uses a sparing amount of text to convey the story, and it is highly effective because the language does not "clutter" the message of the tale. This story encapsulates the feelings of many children by touching on feelings of envy, loneliness, anger, friendliness, and contentment. With the increased awareness of bullying in schools and the growing understanding of its severe repercussions for young people, this book is an excellent resource for any children's collection.

Highly Recommended.
