Pup and Hound are back in these two stories for beginning readers. Lots of repetition and easy words make these two books great material for children just learning to read and ready to try something on their own. Susan Hood's rhymes are lots of fun to read for small children of any age, and Linda Hendry's illustrations are full of action and color. The illustrations will help beginning readers because they follow the action of the story very closely.

     In Pup and Hound in Trouble, the reader finds that it is actually Pup who is in trouble, over and over again, and Hound who is the hero.

Hound paddled out to rescue Pup. He huffed and puffed and pulled him up. Pup shook and watered all the flowers. "YEOW!" said Cat, who hated showers.

     Pup meets many of the barnyard creatures in this story as he goes from one spot of trouble to the next. In the end, it is Pup who is a hero to his friends because he accidentally dumps a bag of feed and all the barnyard animals get an afternoon treat.

     In Pup and Hound Stay Up Late, Pup meets a new friend and gets into trouble again. Hound is having trouble figuring out why Pup is so sleepy:

Hound woke up later. He heard Pup snore. Pup slept and slept and slept some more. Hound grunted and sighed. What was wrong with Pup? He was sleeping all day! Would he ever get up?

     The next night Hound follows Pup when he leaves the house and discovers that Pup has been playing with Ollie the Opossum all night. Hound joins in the fun and the next day both dogs are found sleeping through the day by their friends.

     These are delightful books that would be a welcome addition to any public or school library collecting beginning readers. They are the right length, cover suitable material and are interesting to read and look at.
