The simple text would also serve as an entry point to research for those with reading difficulties. The author has chosen to tell the story of the development of this country and some of the major events in our history by following the RCMP around the country. The officers serve as a unifying device in both the text and the pictures. The artwork in this book really zings. The bright primary colours used are reminiscent of the work of Byron Barton and other picture book illustrators. The Mounties are visually stunning in a bright red. The country landscape seems like a Group of Seven portrait in primary brights. The text while covering such important events as the Riel rebellion and the building of the CPR, does not miss out on the hardship of early Canadian life, either. The blackflies and dirt are as important as civilized elements such as the cities and British royalty. Most importantly, the roles of Canada's native peoples and immigrants are portrayed as being equally important in the development of Canada. Highly recommended.
