Gah-Ning wants to go to Kapuskasing even though her father is reluctant to take her. Determinedly, she sets out down the road, first on her bicycle and then her roller-blades, only to have father bring her back. He lectures her on the dangers of travelling alongside trucks, cars, buses and motorcycles. The next day she visits the library, where a clown is giving out balloons after a performance. Gah-Ning asks for 300 balloons, whereupon she floats off to Kapuskasing.

This typical Robert Munsch offering is a simple story rendered with some repetitive phrasing that allows anticipation of what happens next. A zany plot, comical humour, a determined young protagonist and a frazzled parent all contribute to the fun. Part of the "Munsch for Kids" series, it will serve either as an easy reading selection or as a read-aloud book.

The book is further enhanced by the spectacular artwork of Helene Desputeaux. She has executed full-colour double-page spreads and riotous illustrations that complement the text with humour and sensitivity.

Gah-Ning will make a good addition to the Munsch collection in school and public libraries.

Recommended for purchase.
