Payzant Volume 22 Number 4 1994 September Pocket Brain Teasers is an attractive and intriguing little book that children, parents and teachers will find hard to put down. It has 121 simple but thought-provoking questions to challenge the reader to "think in new and unusual ways," according to author/math teacher Robert Larin. The answers require both logic and imagination. Older readers will find some familiar puzzles like the old problem of searching for a matching pair of socks in the dark in a bureau drawer which contains equal numbers of red and black socks. But there are many unfamiliar ones, too: "You are driving a bus which can carry 48 junior high school students ages between 12 and 13. Can you determine the age of the bus driver?" Fortunately, answers are provided at the back of the book, along with a short chapter on teaching math and logic. Printed on good quality paper with pleasant little three-colour illustrations on each page, and easy-to-read type. A must for paperback racks and teachers' personal collections. Joan M.
